Voices for Climate Action
Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) is part of the VCA global program that supports local civil society and underrepresented groups to mobilize popular support for regionally tailored climate solutions. This one-year project, in partnership with WWF-Kenya, aimed at increasing women’s literacy by 30% per year to better manage marine resources.
Ocean Literacy
The project's intervention explored ocean literacy to identify knowledge gaps amongst women in regard to marine conservation and women's leadership. It also sought to create awareness about indigenous knowledge systems and nature-based solutions in relation to climate change, and build women’s understanding of how the loss of key marine habitats such as mangroves, seagrass and corals leads to threats and degradation.
The Execution
During its implementation in the Shimoni-Vanga seascape .A total of 57 community members (30 youth and 27 women) were trained on climate change, mangrove restoration, value chain aspects of fisheries and seaweed. A gender guide was developed as a training manual and as a guide in implementing gender-segregated projects.
In addition, maps for climate change impacts were developed on different ecological systems (shoreline change, saltwater intrusion and drought menace on water systems).
The Impact
Our Impact
"The essence of VCA is to ensure the voices of women are amplified and women themselves take the front row in conservation as they make up a great percentage of those who directly rely on marine resources." - Risper Oteke, Associate, COMRED
