Value Chain Assessment And Business Development Consultant
COMRED supports communities as part of its goal of improving livelihoods for the communities dependent on marine resources. To further enhance and diversify livelihoods we seek to gather background information that will be useful in shaping our interventions. A value chain assessment of existing livelihood initiatives is thus required, to establish the status, dynamics, and operational aspects. The value chain assessment is expected to inform the types of value chain initiatives to be supported and identify required capacity-building needs. This will also entail developing a sustainable business model(s) for identified value chains. We are therefore looking for a consultant to undertake the above work.
Who we are looking for
Required core competencies
· Expertise in business development within the Micro, Small and Medium enterprises (MSME) sector.
· Demonstrated experience in business planning and project implementation.
· Ability to design and use various assessment and appraisal tools to determine current business status, point out the gaps and recommend solutions. Such as:
o Value chain assessment.
o Business Model Canvas (BMC).
o McKinsey 7s.
· Ability to design customized training modules and run training for trainers (TOT) and oversee delivery of training at various levels.
o Training, coaching and mentoring expertise.
o Ability to integrate life skills and emotional intelligence in business development.
o Ability to raise local leadership in community groups for sustainability.
Duties and Responsibilities
Scope of work
1. Undertake scoping for viable value chains/businesses
2. Conduct in-depth value chain assessment/business appraisal of the existing businesses/livelihoods using various tools to assess the current situation.
3. Identify capacity needs of value chain operators.
4. Develop a business plan for each viable business bringing in value addition.
5. Lead the development of training modules for the communities to start and improve sustainable businesses.
6. Prepare and induct the project implementing team.
7. Undertake training to communities for the identified value chains/businesses based on the developed modules.
Qualifications
Experience and Skills
The consultant should have 3-5 years experience in:
· Integrated approach to business development.
· Working with MSME, especially in the blue economy.
· Exposure to agribusiness.
· Value addition and product development skills.
· Market development skills.
· Good communication skills at corporate and community levels.
· Ability to build networks and partnerships among government and non-government development agencies.
· Training skills at TOT level, (adult learning expertise), preferably International Labour Organization’s Start and Improve YourBusiness (SIYB) certified.
Added advantage
· Exposure to business development among coastal communities of Kenya.

Note that COMRED will cover the travel costs of field facilitation and therefore should not be quoted.
