Urban centres in Kenya are faced with sustainable waste management challenges. The involvement of urban communities in waste management can help eradicate this problem as it not only provides a platform for participation but also creates employment, especially for the youth.
The project, dubbed “Kilifi Integrated Project”, funded by the European Union through the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) aimed at improving solid waste management in Kilifi town while creating employment for community members (through the Kilifi Green Town Community Based Organization).
This was achieved through the recycling of waste (plastics and market waste composting) and provision of waste transportation trailers to Kilifi municipality. Awareness of solid waste management and waste recycling training was also conducted with the public and members of Kilifi Green Town.
