Establishing a Vibrant Locally Managed Marine Area in Kwale

Reaping benefits from a Locally Marine Managed Area (LMMA) in Msambweni, Kwale DIstrict

Local communities in Kenya have delegated roles to manage and govern their resources in collaboration with stakeholders. This is in recognition of the important roles communities play in protecting and conserving their resources in the face of degradation and fragmentation caused by human pressure.

Munje community, represented by Munje Beach Management Unit in collaboration with the Msambweni Turtle and Marine Conservation Group and COMRED, courtesy of donor support from GEF-Small Grants Programme established a community protected area within their fishing grounds and close to the beach.

Today, incredible marine life flourishes there, providing refuge for fish and attracting snorkelers.
