Rehabilitating Abandoned and Degraded Quarries in Kilifi

Mtondia Quarry rehabilitation, Kilifi district

Coral fossils found along the coastal strip provide good construction material for houses and commercial buildings, especially in urban areas where demand is high. Miners in Mtondia, Kilifi district, a popular place for block mining, often leave the mines unrehabilitated, contrary to environmental regulations that require rehabilitation after ending mining activities.

Kilio Cha Haki group, a youth group in Kilifi district, has been advocating for the observance of these regulations while also rehabilitating abandoned mines. During this project, about 10 acres were rehabilitated with casuarina trees following intervention by the European Union-Indian Ocean Commission in collaboration with COMRED.
