Improving the Efficiency and Capacity of Small-Scale Fishing Communities in Kwale

This pilot project introduced four Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) to the inshore areas of Gazi-Msabweni, with the intention of promoting the fishing of large pelagic species (offshore or just outside the reef) among local small-scale fishing communities. The collaborative initiative, funded by the European Union through the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), supported efforts by the Kenyan Government under the Kenya Coastal Development Programme towards the deployment and management of FADs along Kenya’s coast.

Other than introducing FADs, fishers were trained on new and more efficient FAD fishing techniques in order to increase their catches.
